The health benefits of exercise are well documented. Exercise can play an important role in lowering blood pressure, reducing cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing bone density, improving digestion and circulation and changing body composition. Regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain types of cancer. Research demonstrates that exercise can improve mood and play a role in preventing and treating depression and anxiety.
Our Approach to Exercise
Most of us know we should exercise, yet we do not. There always seems to be something better to do or not enough time to fit regular physical activity into our busy daily lives. Fresh Start takes a different approach with exercise! Using education and sustainability as key program components, guests have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of exercise classes and workshops. The sessions are diverse and include a Gentle Movement Series with a focus on breathe-work, range of motion, functional training, strength training with bands and exploring movement. These safe classes assist in helping guests become comfortable in their bodies and embrace their ability to move! Other physical activities include guided nature walks/ excursions, yoga and Zumba.
Exercise Program for Beginners and the Advanced
No fitness experience is necessary! Our exercise and yoga program is light and enjoyable – perfect for those who do not enjoy or may feel intimidated by intense boot camp-style workouts. Our yoga and fitness instructors have a very gentle approach and will gladly help people with limited mobility or pain to find postures and exercises that work best for them. Those who would like a more intense workout will be equally assisted to learn how to receive the maximum benefit out of their class. The adjustments will be done to the maximum extent possible in a group setting.
What if I need more? A predominant majority of our guests feel that the intensity of the exercise we offer is just right for them, and among the multiple options almost everyone can find something to enjoy. However for those who want more intensive advanced exercise, or on the opposite – need therapeutic , highly modified movement classes due to an advanced structural condition, for those who aim explore in depth specific type of exercise, or desire to receive an individual exercise prescription/ training, individual fitness coaching and yoga classes are available (additional fees apply).
Gentle Movement Series
A slow, progressive series of classes that encompass all components of fitness including cardiovascular health, muscular strength, muscular endurance and flexibility. The classes may include:
- Range of motion and stretching. Learn what basics are the best to take home to keep your joints mobile and assist with injury prevention and healing.
- Functional training that emulates regular daily activity at home, such as how to stand up and sit down properly without injuring your knees or your back.
- Movement exploration to connect with and embrace your body, such as Worldbeat, a playful non-choreographed movement and dance class intended to promote personal connection along with a sense of freedom and well-being.
- Muscular strength and endurance training with resistance bands. Learn about the major muscle groups in your body and how to do safe and effective exercise at home.
- Breath work to assist with digestion and relieve stress by working with the para-sympathetic nervous system.
Zumba is a combined dance and fitness program originating from Columbia. It includes both dance and aerobics movement, and incorporates music from many cultures. Being one of the most active class we offer, Zumba is an ultimate weight-loss activity. Zumba classes are subject to availability of an instructor.
Nature Walks and Excursions
Fresh air and movement are great any time, but especially important, when you are on a health program. Walks provide your body with healthy oxygen and accelerate healing. This is why both independent and guided walks are an essential part of our programs.
Distance of Excursions and Walking Time
In order to get your blood circulating, we would like to invite you for some guided walks. The usual walking time for our routes is 1 hour to 1 ½ hours, with occasional walks 2+ hrs. The total time (including driving) for most walks is 1.5-2.5 hours.
For more details of walk routes see the section on Nature and Natural Facilities.
What if I Cannot Walk Far?
For those who have mobility issues and cannot walk for a long period of time, walking around the property, or in its proximity at a comfortable pace is an option. We’ll show you a simple route and give you the walking map. Get into the routine: it will enhance your flexibility, will lift up your spirits and will improve your well-being. If it rains – take an umbrella from the lobby of the hotel or spa centre.
Start your day off with an amazing ocean view from our yoga studio as you move with your breath through the union of mind, body and spirit. Yoga – Just do it and see: it is worth every effort and will energize you for the day. The style of yoga we use most often is Kripalu – compassionate yoga, which emphasizes honoring one’s body and supports individual needs of participants to the maximum extent possible. It suits all levels, and is dynamic and fun. Yoga has proven to be very effective for many of our guests with back, shoulder and neck problems. Morning yoga classes alternate with guided meditations.
Note: Our activities and classes may slightly change overtime.
